IN A BOOK ABOUT DIVERSIFICATION such as this, the reader would rightfully expect to find ideas on how to generate more wealth from activities complementary to translating and language. I will try, however, in my chapter to show how my core work – translating – can generate that additional income without diversifying into new areas of entrepreneurship.

I have grown a freelance business from a solo practitioner to a partnership, and built a globally dispersed team of translators to meet the increasing demand on our services. Admittedly, a lot of the process was in the form of organic growth, and to begin with rather unplanned. The lessons learned were valuable, however, and as the adage would have it, ‘all’s well that ends well’. To start with, let’s look at the limits imposed on my ability as solo practitioner to generate additional income actively while remaining sane, and how I circumvented these limits while still concentrating on my core business of translating, because that is what I am passionate about and do best.
